Continuous Simulation Of Losses For Design Flood Estimation
By Dr Walter Boughton
About The Workshop
A major weakness in the event-based procedure for design flood estimation is uncertainty about design losses. This workshop presents a new approach incorporating:
Daily rainfall generation for long periods (thousands of years)
Disaggregation of daily to hourly rainfalls
Continuous simulation of losses by catchment water balance
Flood hydrograph modelling at the catchment outlet
Extraction of the peak hydrographs for design frequency analysis
The Continuous Simulation System has 3 features that eliminate errors in the design process. The system calculates baseflow as well as surface runoff, and comparison with observed floods is made with total flow, eliminating the errors involved in subjective separation of surface runoff from baseflow. The second feature is that the system avoids the cumbersome and objective step of finding a critical rainfall duration for the catchment with the attendant inconsistency in design temporal pattern. The third feature is that the flood hydrograph model WBMOD is calibrated to all flood events at the same time, eliminating the need to find an average set of parameters after calibrating to individual flood events.
Participants in the workshop will be given a complete set of the recently updated computer programs, together with an operating manual and test data sets. The participants will receive hands-on training in the use of the system and how to prepare other data sets for analysis. The recent updating has provided for reading of AWBM97 parameter files for use of the system programs, output of AWBM97 parameter files and output of flow duration curves for checking of low flow consistency.
Venue
The workshop will be held in the rooms of Queensland Technology Training, Level 4, 138 Albert Street between Elizabeth and Mary Streets in the Brisbane CBD. There are only 20 computers available and registrations cannot exceed that limit. Acceptance of registration will be strictly on a first-in basis.
Cost And Registration
The expected registration cost for the workshop is about $150 and will include copies of programs and manual, use of the training facilities, lunch and morning and afternoon teas.
Presenter - Dr Walter Boughton
Dr Walter Boughton is a Civil Engineer with a long career in hydrology. He developed the original Boughton model, the SFB model, the AWBM model, and the programs that form the continuous simulation system. He was responsible for preparing the book "A Century of Water Resources Development in Australia 1900-1999" issued at the Water99 Congress in Brisbane. He was the inaugural recipient of the G. N. Alexander Medal of the Institution. He is the author of about 100 research papers and reports in hydrology. Dr Boughton is an Honorary Senior Fellow of Griffith University.
