The course on the planning and design of stormwater management measures is directed at professionals in the stormwater industry at a number of levels including catchment planning and management, and, stormwater infrastructure design, construction, operation and maintenance. The course has been designed to equip attendees with
- an overview of the principles of integrated urban catchment management for multiple environmental objectives,
- an understanding of the causes and effects of environmental problems associated with urban stormwater;
- an understanding of the operation of various stormwater management measures; and
- worked examples of how these facilities are designed.
A comprehensive set of course notes will be provided.
The course is presented over 5 days (including a day of field inspection of urban stormwater quality improvement facilities) divided into two parts to allow different levels of participation.
Part A of the course spans over two days and examines the general planning issues of integrated urban catchment management followed by an overview of current best management practices in stormwater management. The attendees will have sufficient appreciation of the management issues and current available technologies to participate in a workshop in Day 2 aimed at formulating a stormwater management strategy for a hypothetical catchment with prespecified environmental conditions and development characteristics. Attendees will be divided into small groups and assigned either a hypothetical greenfield or built-up catchment so to develop a stormwater management strategy.
Part B of the course spans over two days and is aimed at providing attendees with hands-on experience in the design of some of the commonly used BMP measures. These measures include Gross Pollutant Traps, Stormwater Infiltration Systems and Constructed Wetlands.
