CRC for Catchment Hydrology Postgraduate Rebecca Bartley won the 'Showcasing CRC Postgraduate Students' Award at the CRC Association conference in Perth last week.
Four PhD students from thirty-three applicants working with CRCs around Australia were selected to showcase the value of their research to a packed morning session at the CRC Association conference. The session was sponsored by CSIRO.
Students were selected for the conference session on a competitive basis according to their ability to communicate effectively about research achievement to a non-specialist audience. Rebecca's presentation was judged as the best presentation at the conference. The award presented by the Hon. Dr Carmen lawrence, Shadow Minister for Industry, Innovation and Technology included a $2,000 cheque from the CRC Association for professional development travel.
Rebecca's presentation entitled 'Giant slugs attack Australian streams - Research to the Rescue' described her research into the one billion tonnes of sediment that is eroded from Australia's stream's and catchments each year. Such an impact has the potential to devastate our already fragile river systems. Rebecca's research has produced a range of techniques to help determine the severity of this disturbance, and, more importantly, the ability of a river to recover and return to a healthy condition.
