The provision of high quality drinking water is a fundamental element of good public health. Recently, a number of investigative studies and outbreaks of waterborne disease caused by emerging pathogens such as Cryptosporidium have raised concern about the safety of drinking water supplies even in developed nations. Perhaps of most concern are Canadian studies suggesting that drinking water meeting conventional water quality standards may be responsible for a large proportion of community gastroenteritis.
To address this issue, the CRC for Water Quality and Treatment has developed a comprehensive research program to assess the effect of water quality on human health. By bringing together the expertise of public health researchers and the water industry, an innovative new approach to water quality assessment has been developed. The outcomes of this research program will allow regulators and communities to make better informed and more cost-effective decisions about future water treatment requirements.
