New Research Report - Predicting Catchment Behaviour Program

March 19, 2002

'Estimation of Pollutant Concentrations for EMSS Modelling of the South-East Queensland Region' by Francis Chiew and Philip Scanlon - CRC Report 02/2.

This report describes the analyses of water quality data in the south-east Queensland region to determine event mean concentration (EMC) and dry weather concentration (DWC) values for various land uses in the region. The values will be adopted in the Environmental Management Support System (EMSS) software for south-east Queensland to estimate pollutant loads from catchments in the region. The EMC and DWC values are estimated for total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN), for five land use categories: urban, natural bush, managed forest, grazing and cropping.

The two main sources of readily available water quality data that are useful for the analyses are Brisbane City Council and Department of Natural Resources. The local data sets, together with published values in the literature, are used to estimate the EMC and DWC values. These values are tabulated below together with indications of how much local data are used to estimate them.

In general, there are some local data to estimate the EMC and DWC values, but a lot more monitoring is required to estimate the EMC values accurately. The report also provides recommendations of targeted monitoring programs that can be undertaken to improve estimates of pollutant concentrations and to better understand the pollutant characteristics.
