CRC for Catchment Hydrology appoints Professor Rob Vertessy as New Director

Professor Rob Vertessy has been appointed Director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Catchment Hydrology. He succeeds Professor Russell Mein who retires at the end of June 2002 following a distinguished record of achievement, including seven years as CRC Director.

Prof Vertessy, whose appointment follows a national and international advertising and selection process, has also been appointed an Honorary Professorial Fellow at Monash University. He has been a Deputy Director of the CRC for Catchment Hydrology since 1995 as leader of the CRC group at CSIRO Land and Water, Canberra.

Rob Vertessy has an international reputation in hydrologic research. As a Principal Research Scientist with CSIRO Land and Water, he has led CSIRO's Integrated Catchment Modelling Group and the CRC's Program on 'Predicting Catchment Behaviour'.

During the last decade, Rob has been a major investigator and consultant for research contracts in Australia on land and water management issues. He is a co-editor with Richard Stirzaker and Alastair Sarre of the recently published 'Trees, water and salt: An Australian guide to using trees for healthy catchments and productive forms', RIRDC, Canberra.

Prof Vertessy holds a BA (First Class Honours) from Monash University and a PhD from the Australian National University. He is also the co-author of some forty journal publications and book chapters

Prof Vertessy is active in international research groups as leader of the International Union of Forest Research Organisation (IUFRO) International Task Force on Forests and Water. He recently won the prestigious IUFRO Scientific Achievement Award.

Prof Vertessy will be based at CSIRO Land and Water, Canberra.
